I completely agree with KM. The actual environment needs to come first because EVERYONE will be affected by that (not just the US benefited by energy security or individuals who may worry about their own power bills). This isn't something that will be solved by people who don't consider the big picture. 
The USA needs to do everything possible to be independent from OPEC. We have the resources here, plus we can do all of the other things that will help the folks, plus the enviroment. However, one must realize that all of the World Countries must also do their share. I think of it as three yards side by side. I am the middle yard, all of the yards have dandalions. If I rid my yard of them, but the other two yards do not, I will have not accomplished my goal. I know thats a simple way of putting it, but then I am just a simple guy.
KM put it as simply and eloquently as it gets. There is no more important issue facing my kids in their futures.
